Inspired by the above 3 tracks, and played according to my limitations.

Included some improvisations – couldn’t copy U.NFAK’s alaaps .. not even close! Going to keep trying.

Sanu Ik Pal Chain has been stuck in my head for a week or so. Decided to play it , then decided to record it , and the other two also sort of flowed in.

It’s pretty relaxing – maybe because I was pretty relaxed when I recorded it.

Raag Darbari
Iktaal – 12 beat cycle. Tried getting a big war-drum type effect.

I first heard the tune from Ragi Kalyan Singh Ji, singing the Shabad “Kaval Nain Madhur Bain”

Tried a recording a folksy type tune. I still need to work out how to get the drums to loop correctly. I’ll get better at this soon.

Raag Bhairavi Attempt

Attempted play of Raag Bhairavi in Jhaptaal.
The tune was inspired by the Bandish for the Shabad “Koun Ko Kalank Rehyo Ram Naam Layt Hee” sung by Ustad Bhai Baljeet Singh and Gurmeet Singh Namdhari. I just fit it to a really relaxed 10 matra cycle at 60 bpm.

I hope you find it pleasant to listen to.

Nice classical song in Raag Hameer / Tintaal (Teen Taal) from the 1980 Movie – “Mandi”.
Beautiful bandish – very complicated.

Instrumental .mp3 recordings of my Ustad, Maiya Singh ji, on Esraj. Plus some background experimentation by me.

The tracks have not been given any fancy made-up names. The names you see below are the names of the Raags (Ragas) used.

The suffixes 7bt , 11bt, 10bt indicate the number of beats in the rhythm cycle used.

If you’re new to Indian classical music – this album should give you a basic sense of the variety, complexity, spontaneity, and spirituality present. Maiya Singh ji’s playing style is particularly expressive.

I think all the tracks are also great for when you want to focus, relax, or sleep.

My personal favorites are Raag Megh -10 beat & Raag Alhaiya Bilawal – 10 beat.
